Prevent And Reverse Blindness With Nutirtion And Herbal Medicine

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in people over 50 years of age

New Research

According to Prof Nolan “the good news is that we know now that the risk of the condition can be reduced through relatively simple nutritional measures. Importantly, we now know what nutrition works best for the eye.

New groundbreaking scientific trials are being carried out at Waterford Institute of Technology’s (WIT) Macular Pigment Research Group (MPRG) using nutritional supplements to treat and prevent AMD. The Irish Independent reported on Feb 3rd 2014 that todate the research has shown to improve vision in people.

Norah Norton, a 70-year-old woman from Cork, who was told eight years ago that her deteriorating eyesight would force her to give up driving, now describes her vision as near perfect after using the nutrition supplements for one year.

What nutrients are important for improving eyesight?

From previous research, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, two nutrients found in eggs, spinach, leafy green vegetables and certain herbal medicines protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

A study just published in the Archives of Ophthalmology involved 4,519 people aged 60 to 80 found that people who ate the most foods containing lutein and zeaxanthin had a 35 percent lower risk of developing AMD than those who ate the least.

The nutrients may protect against the condition by helping your eyes to filter dangerous short-wavelength light, and warding off other potentially damaging effects to the center of your eye’s retina (the macula).

There’s nothing new here as numerous studies in the past have found that consuming foods rich in these nutrients can significantly reduce your risk of AMD. So people of all ages should ensure adequate intake of these beneficial nutrients to protect there eye sight.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids, which are responsible for the yellow colour in many fruits and vegetables

Wraps

The great thing about wraps is that the "wrap" can be so many different things. While the most obvious is a tortilla (preferably whole wheat and sprouted), other choices include toasted nori seaweed sheets, crepes or a large leaf of lettuce. Here are some easy creative inspirations:

Foods that are good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin include:

  • Eggs
  • Leafy greens like spinach, kale, turnip greens, collard greens, and romaine lettuce
  • Broccoli
  • Zucchini
  • Garden peas and Brussels sprouts
  • Herbal Medicines: Curcuma longum, Ginkgo biloba, Bilberry extract, Saffron extract

The key here however it to consume the above foods where possible in their raw form. Once you heat spinach or eggs the lutein and zeaxanthin become damaged - and they will not perform as well in preventing degeneration of your macula.

Eat the majority of your leafy greens raw. Eggs are fine to consume raw, and are very nutritious but ensure that they are organic and fresh. Soft boiled is good too.

There are also great herbal medicine formula that can be taken for the promotion and maintenance of healthy eye function. There are some herbs, including the ones mentioned above, that contain high levels of Lutein and Zeaxanthin as well as other beneficial antioxidants for eye health.
